Where is your studio located?
I work out of my home in Fairview, Oregon, which is located just about a mile outside Portland. I live in walking distance of two lakes, so it makes for peaceful walks and a breathtaking scenery.
With Portland being the number one city to live in the United States, there is no place quite like it. Mt. Hood is in the distance, Washington is just beyond the Columbia River and the Oregon coast is only an hour and a half away. There is never a shortage of inspiration; it's an artist's gold mine!
How did you get started in your craft? What inspires you?
After college, I worked as a graphic designer for many years. I found my niche though, when I took a job as a graphic designer at a small wedding invitation boutique in Portland. There, I honed my skills, design style and learned the ins and outs of the industry. There wasn't a day that went by when inspiration wasn't knocking at my door. So, I made the decision to venture out on my own.
What are the top 3 tools that are most important in your craft?
Pen, paper and my computer
What's a typical day in the studio like?
After I get my son off to school, the work day begins with black coffee and a protein bar. I listen to the news while checking emails as a brain warm up.
My little buddy, Henry, sits on a stool in my office to keep me company. Then I'm ready to start the creative process. The musical sounds of Tora or Frou Frou play in the background and then I start my sketching research.
I am drawn to nature and natural textures and find inspiration on walks or on my journeys around the city. I try to add a few new designs a week to my shop to keep it fresh.
What are the greatest rewards of creating something that is handmade?
Drawing has become one of my basic needs. My parents enrolled me in art classes as a child and I have been drawing ever since. I love that I am able to incorporate my art into my invitations. I feel so lucky that I am able to do what I want everyday with no regrets. Etsy has given me a great opportunity to sell my art and meet some amazing and talented artists along the way. I hope I am able to continue putting smiles on my customer's faces for years to come.
